性状：结晶结晶性粉末。有二氧化硫气味。干燥时稳定。对湿敏感。较结晶稳定，但久贮可氧化成硫酸钠，加热分解为硫酸钠和硫化钠。溶于水，溶于甘油，不溶于乙醇。水溶液呈碱性，pH约为9。半数致死量（大鼠，静脉）115mg/kg。有刺激性。密度：2.633；熔点：500°C。
用途：生化研究。制亚硫酸纤维素酯、硫代硫酸钠、有机化学药品、漂白织物等, 还用作还原剂、防腐剂、去氯剂等
